Prednisone (Generic Sterapred, Deltasone) is a corticosteroid that relieves inflammation by decreasing your immune system’s response to certain diseases or conditions. It can reduce symptoms of inflammation, including swelling and allergic reactions caused by multiple conditions.
What is prednisone used for?
Prednisone is used to suppress the inflammatory immune response that occurs with multiple conditions, including:
Allergies
Arthritis
Asthma
Endocrine problems
Kidney problems
Lupus
Skin conditions
Stomach or bowel issues (Crohn’s disease)
Ulcerative colitis
It relieves swelling, redness, itching, and other common allergic reactions.
How does prednisone work?
Corticosteroids work by mimicking the effects of cortisol, a natural hormone produced by your adrenal glands (small glands on top of your kidneys), to reduce inflammation in your body. Corticosteroids can also suppress your immune system, so it doesn't attack your tissues when mistaking them for harmful pathogens.
